Pet grooming towels are not a side purchase. They are a core supply for any business that washes and dries animals in volume. Whether you run a standalone pet salon, a mobile grooming van, or a pet care department inside a larger facility, the right towels save you time, labor, and water usage. Towel Depot has supplied wholesale linen to the pet industry since 1967, and we know which towels hold up to daily commercial use.

TLDR: Buy pet grooming towels in 600 to 700 GSM ring spun cotton. Use a 27 by 52 inch bath sheet as your standard size. Wash them at 140°F (60°C) with a neutral pH detergent. Replace them after 150 to 200 wash cycles to maintain hygiene and performance.

Why do pet grooming businesses need specialized towels instead of regular household towels?

Household bath towels are built for occasional human use. They have a fluffy loop construction that traps moisture, but they shed lint quickly under heavy commercial washing. A pet grooming shop runs 8 to 15 loads of laundry per day. Regular towels develop frayed edges and lost absorbency after 30 to 40 cycles. That is less than two months of daily work.

Specialized pet grooming towels use a tighter weave and higher density yarn. Our wholesale pet towels are made from 100 percent ring spun cotton with a GSM of 630. That density means each towel absorbs 1.2 gallons of water per wash without dripping. The loops are cut shorter to resist snagging on claws and fur. A household towel has loops that can catch and pull out, leaving a hole. A grooming towel does not have that problem.

The hygiene standards also differ. Pets carry bacteria and fungi that can transfer to surfaces. The CDC recommends laundering pet bedding and towels at a minimum of 140°F (60°C) to kill pathogens like Salmonella and ringworm spores. Household laundry instructions often limit water temperature to 120°F (49°C) to protect colors. Professional grooming towels are pre shrunk and dyed with industrial grade colorfastness, so they tolerate hot water and chlorine bleach without fading or shrinking more than 3 percent after 100 washes.

What GSM weight is ideal for pet grooming towels?

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It measures fabric density. For pet grooming, you want a GSM between 600 and 700. Below 500, the towel feels thin and dries too fast but does not hold enough water. You need two or three towels per animal. That adds laundry volume and drying time. Above 700, the towel becomes heavy when wet. A soaked 700 GSM bath sheet can weigh 4 pounds. Wringing it out by hand strains your staff.

Our best seller for pet grooming is a 630 GSM towel. It strikes the sweet spot. One towel absorbs the water from a Labrador sized dog in under 45 seconds. The fabric holds firm without dripping on the floor, which reduces slip hazards. OSHA recommends maintaining dry floors in commercial animal care facilities. A towel that does not drip cuts your slip risk by an estimated 60 percent.

GSM also affects drying time in your laundry system. A 600 GSM towel dries in about 35 minutes in a 30 pound gas dryer. A 700 GSM towel needs 45 minutes. Over a full day, that 10 minute difference per load adds up to an extra hour of dryer runtime. Multiply that by 300 working days, and you are looking at $400 to $600 in extra energy costs per year. Choose the GSM that fits your workflow.

How should pet grooming towels be washed and maintained for long life?

Wash towels immediately after each use. Do not let wet towels sit in a hamper for more than two hours. Bacteria multiply rapidly in warm moist fabric. Pre rinse with cold water to flush out loose hair and dirt. Then wash with hot water at 140°F (60°C). Use a commercial detergent with a neutral pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Avoid fabric softener. Softener coats the cotton fibers and reduces absorbency by up to 30 percent.

Add a half cup of chlorine bleach per load every third wash to sanitize. Chlorine bleach at 5.25 percent concentration kills 99.9 percent of bacteria and viruses when left in contact for 10 minutes at 140°F (60°C). The EPA lists bleach as an effective disinfectant for laundry when used according to label instructions. Rinse twice to remove all chemical residue. Residual bleach can irritate a pet’s skin, especially on dogs with allergies.

Tumble dry on medium heat until towels are 90 percent dry. Overdrying damages the cotton fibers and shortens towel life. Remove towels while still slightly damp. Fold and stack them with the hem facing outward so the loops do not get compressed. A well maintained 630 GSM towel should handle 180 to 200 commercial wash cycles before it loses its nap. At one wash per day per towel, that is about 18 months of use. Replace towels sooner if you notice frayed edges or reduced absorbency.

What are the best materials for pet grooming towels?

Ring spun cotton is the best material for pet grooming towels. Ring spun yarn is twisted tighter than open end yarn, which gives the towel a smoother surface and stronger fibers. A ring spun cotton towel at 630 GSM lasts 30 percent longer than an open end towel at the same weight. It also produces less lint. Less lint means fewer stops to clean the dryer filter and less hair stuck in the fabric.

Microfiber towels have a place in grooming, but not as your primary drying towel. Microfiber is made from polyester and polyamide. It absorbs 7 times its weight in water and dries in half the time of cotton. However, the split fibers catch on dewclaws and matted fur. They can also cause microfiber pollution when washed. The EPA notes that microplastics from synthetic textiles enter waterways during laundry. For these reasons, we recommend reserving microfiber for wiping down tables, tools, and cages. Use cotton on the animals.

Bamboo towels are marketed as eco friendly, but do not buy them for professional grooming. Bamboo rayon has a soft hand feel, but its wet strength is low. After 50 washes, bamboo towels develop holes and lose shape. They also require cold water washing and air drying to maintain size, which is impractical in a high volume salon. Stick with 100 percent ring spun cotton or a cotton polyester blend if you need lower cost. A 50/50 cotton poly blend at 550 GSM is a budget option that still performs well for drying light coated breeds.

How many towels does a professional pet grooming shop need?

A solo groomer handling 4 to 6 dogs per day needs a minimum of 48 towels. That allows 4 towels per animal with enough extras for spill cleanup and a backup set for the next laundry cycle. For a shop with 3 groomers handling 12 to 15 dogs daily, scale that to 144 towels. We recommend ordering 200 units as a starting point. This gives you a full rotation with a 10 percent buffer for lost or damaged towels.

If you also offer self service pet washing stations, add another 2 towels per station per hour of operation. A self service bay that sees 10 customers on Saturday needs 20 towels just for that day. Bulk ordering 250 to 500 towels from Towel Depot ensures you have consistent quality across all your stations. Mix sizes for different tasks. Use 20 by 40 inch hand towels for small breeds and cats. Use 27 by 52 inch bath sheets for large dogs.

Inventory management matters. Track towel usage by labeling each towel with a permanent marker or using color coded hems for different tasks. For example, white towels only for drying, blue towels for kennel cleaning, gray towels for general wiping. Rotate stock so that one third of your towels are new, one third are mid life, and one third are nearing replacement. This system keeps your grooming area running without interruption.

What GSM is best for pet grooming towels?
For professional pet grooming, towels with a GSM of 600 to 700 are ideal. They offer the right balance of high absorbency and quick drying. Towels under 500 GSM wear out too fast. Towels above 700 GSM can be too heavy to handle wet.
Can I use microfiber towels on pets?
Yes, but with caution. Microfiber towels are very absorbent and dry quickly. However, they can snag on long or curly fur. We recommend high GSM cotton for most pet grooming. Save microfiber for wiping down surfaces and equipment.
How often should pet grooming towels be replaced?
Replace pet grooming towels every 150 to 200 industrial wash cycles. With daily use and proper washing, that is roughly 12 to 18 months. Once towels lose their nap or show frayed edges, retire them to cleaning rags.
Are there color options for pet grooming towels?
Yes. Towel Depot offers pet grooming towels in white, light gray, and pale blue. Light colors make it easy to spot stains and track hygiene. Some salons prefer dark colors to hide dirt. We can accommodate custom color orders for bulk purchases of 100 units or more.
What size pet grooming towel is most versatile?
A 27 by 52 inch bath sheet is the most versatile size for pet grooming. It wraps a medium sized dog completely. For small pets like cats or toy breeds, a 20 by 40 inch hand towel works well. Bulk orders usually mix both sizes.
